What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a major component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM theory holds that the functions along with the health and wellness of a person are governed by an energy called ‘qi’. The optimal functioning of this qi can become imbalanced, corrupted, or blocked by several factors related to one’s environment, emotions & lifestyle. Very fine acupuncture needles (single use & sterilised) are gently inserted at specific acupuncture points that lay along the numerous channels that spread and move qi around the body.
Much like a coder might re-write specific lines of code to fix complex software that has become buggy, by inserting needles at specific acupuncture points we seek to regulate the dysfunctions occurring within your qi to bring about a balanced state of health, wellness & function.
Is Acupuncture Painful?
The short answer is no… acupuncture is not a painful treatment! Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and quite different to the syringe needles used during vaccinations or blood tests. Occasionally, when an acupuncture needle is gently inserted into the skin, a split-second pinch that is often described as feeling similar to a flea bite may be felt.
Once the needles have been retained for the treatment, some clients report a dull aching sensation. These sensations are usually described as very mild, localised and temporary. In addition, the potential for any pain is further minimised by the practice of precise needling technique.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
Acupuncture has a well documented safety profile, with the risks being negligible when the treatments are carried out by a qualified acupuncture practitioner. A study carried out in the UK revealed that out of the 34,000 treatments analysed there were no serious adverse events reported. Furthermore, the most commonly reported reactions during treatments were ‘feeling relaxed’ and ‘feeling energised’.
The negative reactions that did occur in 2.7% of the analysed treatments were described as ‘mild and transient’ (H Macpherson et al, 2001). Indeed, it is the safety profile of Acupuncture & TCM that has contributed to the global popularity it enjoys today.
What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?
The experience of acupuncture can very from person to person and is influenced by several factors including the acupuncture points used and the aims of the treatment. Commonly reported sensations include tingling, localised heaviness, warmth, relaxation, feeling more energised and mild muscle twitches.
TCM views such experiences as a normal and welcome part of the acupuncture process as it is a great indicator that your body and your qi are responding to the treatments in a clear and unmistakable way.
What Will Happen During My First Treatment?
Our work together actually begins before your first treatment where I review the intake form and questionnaire you would have completed as part of the booking process. During your treatment, unique TCM diagnostic methods like pulse and tongue examinations will be performed to provide a comprehensive picture that will be used to formulate your treatment plan.
We will then proceed with your first treatment which will include acupuncture plus any therapies from ‘The System’ that are beneficial for your specific wellness needs and goals. It’s also a great opportunity for us to discuss and address any questions you may have.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Many factors influence and determine how many treatments you may require. Acute injuries & concerns may only require a brief treatment duration where only a handful of treatments are needed. Complex and chronic issues on the other hand, usually require a longer duration of treatment.
We shall of course, discuss this during your first treatment, where I will suggest and recommend the wellness packages and treatment frequency that I think will best support your unique health & wellness goals.
Will My Health Insurance Reimburse Acupuncture Treatments?
Yes! As an ‘Acupuncture Regulatory Authority’ approved clinic, our treatments are covered by the following health insurance providers. Please check your policy for specific coverage details.
